5 Tips to Help You Choose Your Breast Implants

If you are thinking about getting a breast augmentation, it’s normal to have a number of questions about what to expect. In particular, you may wish to know more about breast implants, which play a fundamental role in traditional breast augmentation by providing shape and volume to the bustline.

As a specialist plastic surgeon, Dr Vlad Milovic is frequently approached with implant-related questions. While every patient’s breast surgery experience is unique, Dr Milovic has found that patients can benefit from the general implant-related tips below.

Tip 1: Consider Your Breast Augmentation Goals

When you wake up in the morning, what do you – yes, you – want to see? Be aware that there can be a conflict between your personal desires and those of others in your life, from your family and husband/partner to your friends and even society. It’s vital to remember that this isn’t a decision for anyone but you, and the choice to undergo breast augmentation should never be taken lightly.

Tip 2: Think About Your Lifestyle

Consider your daily activities, work, exercise routine and possible future plans to have children. Your implants should complement your lifestyle, not hinder it. Whether you’re an athlete or have a less physically demanding job, your implants should not restrict your movements or cause discomfort. This should be taken into consideration when you and Dr Milovic discuss implant options.

Tip 3: Be Open to Trying Out Sizes, Shapes & Types

You should be open to considering a variety of implant sizes and shapes, even those you may not have thought of before. An experienced plastic surgeon will measure your chest and breast dimensions, match them to the implant’s dimensions and discuss the numerous types and sizes available to you.

Women will tend to think in terms of cup sizes, because that is how they buy their bras; however, as you may already know, cup sizes are not the most accurate means of measuring for implant sizes, as they can vary. That said, you may find it helpful to mention a desired cup size while planning your procedure with Dr Milovic.

Tip 4: Know the Risks

Even when you seek the care of a reputable surgeon, breast augmentation – like any major cosmetic procedure – comes with inherent risks. As such, it’s vital that you remain aware of the potential complications associated with implants, which include capsular contracture, ruptures, Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) and even just unsatisfactory aesthetic results.

Tip 5: Choose a Qualified Breast Surgeon

This should be one of your first considerations. What are the surgeon’s qualifications? Where will he/she perform the procedure? We advise you to take ample time to meet with various surgeons before making your final decision; in most cases, we feel it’s wisest to consult at least two. Conduct thorough research into each provider’s education, background and offered procedures before meeting with him or her. Moreover, if you do end up visiting their office, make sure they are honest and make you feel comfortable in their presence.* If you feel pressured to make a decision, leave!

During his breast augmentation consultations, Dr Milovic always encourages his patients to clearly communicate their objectives. We use these first-time meetings to give patients time to consider all the information and to make a well informed decision about their new look.
